I was thinking of offering this as the first Stargazer print. Good idea?

Webcomics: a question about scrolling

  • Aug. 26th, 2009 at 9:00 PM

In a nutshell: does scrolling matter? Especially for dramatic or other longer form webcomics*? (quick edit: I'm specifically talking about vertical scrolling here - horizontal scrolling is bad). I've been going back and forth about this. A part of me is arguing that it does and that I should make sure my formatting for the comic pages are about 800px by 600px. But I work in regular comic book format so my pages are all vertically aligned. To make a comic fit that horizontal dimension means that I need to reformat things. Sometimes that's easy (a grid of 6+ panels can be rearranged pretty easily) and sometimes it's hard (splash pages and other large images require some thought and image tweaking). 'Course, when you factor in a nice header, navigation buttons and the like, readers may still have to scroll down to read the comic itself. But once they get there, the comic won't need to be scrolled.

Recent, Brigid Alverson brought back up the old Scott McCloud saw that page geometry matters and that webcomics, no matter their subject matter, should be arranged horizontally.

Me? I'm torn. I'm starting to put thoughts together on what I want a Stargazer webcomic site to look like and this is a big consideration. Webcomics like Girl Genius force readers to scroll without any inherent issues. Webcomic sites like the various Zuda comics are arranged for horizontal screens, but suffer from hideous (from where I sit) flash interfaces that turn me right off. Mr. Lynch thinks scrolling sucks while Ms. Biddle thinks smart readers ain't afraid of no mouse.

So, what do you think? Which way should I go? Simple poll question!

Scrolling?

Oh, it SO matters! Don't scroll!

* I do think it matters for gag and humour strips. Scrolling in that case, particularly for a 3 or 4 panel strip, doesn't seem like a good idea on the face of it.

Miscellaneous in 11 points.

1) Is it a bad thing that I'm perfectly content to spend Friday night sitting outside on the porch with the iPod playing my (very quiet) "sleep" playlist, a glass of cider, the laptop (for occasional e-mail checking), and a book?

2) Von is playing video games inside. We're not exactly party animals, huh...but content.

3) Less than two weeks to my doctor's appointment. Thank gawd. And that's all I have to say about that because this isn't meant to be a pity-me-I-feel-crappy post...I've done too many of those in the past. And will likely still do a few in the future, too, despite my best intentions.

4) Next weekend I'm doing something nutty in a place that speaks mostly French. Anyone care to guess what? I'll give you a hint: it's free!

5) In two weeks I'm going to a cottage. For a girl who's complained in the past about having nothing planned for this summer, the next two weeks are an embarrassment of riches. I still wanna do Boston but now it's going to have to be August because I'm stuck here till after the doctor's appointment mentioned in point #3 (and then I guess I plan around the new surgery date).

6) [info]tscheese wins the prize for best post of the day. She's awesome...and she met a giant cockroach tonight!

7) I feel like writing for the first time in a long time. I have the...interest...and it's been gone a long time. We'll see if anything comes of it.

8) HEY! Did you see Von's post? C'mon, he needs some support: http://vonandmoggy.livejournal.com/367696.html

9) I forgot what I was going to put for #9.

10) Whatcha doing this weekend? Tell me something exciting. Or dull. Or make something up. I really just want e-mail to read tomorrow, okay?

11) Please see #8 again. For me.

Happy weekend! And now...back to my book. Mmm, book.
