I'm not glued to the Discovery Channel, alternately cursing annoying Jay Ingram and geeking out over the Phoenix Mars landing.

Nope.

...

(I am.)

*squeals and runs in circles*

In another life, I work for NASA.

EDIT (8:00pm):
On the surface, intact, transmitting...so far! Yay!

Attention Ottawa folks! You can see the shuttle docked with the space station starting at 6:28pm tonight (Monday, February 11):

It'll just look like a bright star but, still, pretty cool!

Hear ye, hear ye! STS-127, it is!

Von and Moggy 2
Okay, without further ado, let this be the announcement that I will be going to Florida, come hell or high water, in early 2009.

Space shuttle Endeavour (STS-127) has been confirmed for launch with Canadian astronaut Julie Payette on board. It looks like the launch is tentatively set for April (though one source says January and the NASA site doesn't have a date yet at all).

April 23 - Endeavour (STS-127) launch [Polansky, Hurley, Wolf, Payette, Cassidy, Marshburn, Kopra]

I've been increasingly aware that my chances of seeing a shuttle launch have been getting slimmer and slimmer as we get closer to 2010...every shuttle that goes up is one less opportunity for me to see one. So this morning I said to myself...quit waiting for someone else to do it and figure it out yourself!

I also smacked myself in the head a little.

I am NOT going to let 2010 come and go without doing this one thing I've wanted to do for as long as I can remember. I can bus and live on trail mix if I need to...I'm a pretty cheap date.

And, what the hell, while I'm there I may as well see Disneyworld, right? Right. Try a rollercoaster at long last, while I'm there.

Moggy (quite aware she's a space cadet...)

Good news!

Von and Moggy 2
Well, how about that, folks? *counts heads* We all survived the first month of 2008! Okay, so some of us are a little battered and bruised...but we all seem to still be here.

Hey, you, over there...look at me for a sec...yup, that's gonna be a shiner but at least yer here! You in the other corner, is that a cast? How'd you do that? A what with a what now? Ouch! Okay...oh and I'm sorry for your losses, you three in the back. I'm really sorry...yer good people, you deserve better.

But we all seem to be here, so that's something.

Anyways, let's take stock of the year so far.

*stares off into space*

Yeah, okay, so it's been unimpressive so far. But it's only a month old! It can only get better! That's what I said about 2007 SHHH! I don't want to hear that!

No, but seriously...things are looking up. Or at least, they're keeping us on the surface...we aren't drowning, how's that. I'd like some more stuff to go right for Von and I'd give just about anything to get a cancellation date for the surgery crap (February 20th rather than March 19th)...but at least stuff is happening. Slow and steady, right? Right.

So, anyways, happy February...the last month of real winter before we can see spring on the horizon!

Anyways, here, have a picture of me with a baby...there are few shots like this but this is a mighty cute baby. (Cropped to mostly hide the baby since I'm not sure her parents want pictures of her all over the internet...I didn't ask them but I don't think I'd want it. Too many creeps out there, y'know.)

She's a cutie and she actually likes to sit with me! Gasp! Will miracles never cease?

Good luck with February, folks...lemme know if it needs a kick in the butt. I'm happy to help!

Moggy

p.s.
On a sadder note, February 1st means five years since Columbia disintegrated on re-entry. Where has the time gone?

I just started to type almost the exact same entry, got deja vu, looked in the archives and...well, I can't say it any better and so I give you last year's September 11th entry.

Six years...it's gone by so quickly.

_________________________________________________________________

Two very different things are burned forever into my memory.

The first is the explosion of Space Shuttle Challenger; I remember it like it happened yesterday. I remember finding out about it at school, and even the teachers were crying. And I remember the news replaying the explosion over and over again; and it looked completely unreal.

The second is...my cell phone starting to ring just as I reached the door at Espial Group [six] years ago (where I was working as a tech writer in between bookstore shifts) and it was Von telling me that a plane had flown into the World Trade Center.

I assumed a Cessna had lost its way, and I really wanted a coffee; I brushed Von off and continued into the office. Two minutes later, I was glued to the news, e-mail, and radio, horrified. I remember Von calling me to tell me the first tower was gone...and I remember asking him what he meant by "gone." I remember the second tower disappearing. The news replayed every impact and explosion over and over again; and they all looked completely unreal every single time then, too.

Leaving aside my mixed feelings about the war, WMDs, Iraq and Afghanistan, various governments, the rhetoric, religion, Guantanamo, threats to personal freedoms, terrorism, carry-on baggage rules, and everything else that's inextricably connected to September 11th, for good or for bad...

Here's to happier tomorrows.

Moggy

Von and Moggy 2
Good morning,

Welcome to another Monday morning! I was hoping to come into the office this morning to find that the office pool had won the lottery on Saturday night ($35 million!) but no such luck. We're trying again for the $40 million draw on Wednesday and I feel really good about it.

(That's a joke; it's what I always, ALWAYS say when I have a lottery ticket in hand.)(Though I do feel good about our chances this time.)(No, really, that's a joke...I always say it.)(But this time! THIS TIME WE'LL WIN!)(Still a joke.)(By Thursday, Von and I will be millionaires!)(You guessed it, a joke.)

Anyways, random stuff and some geekery (it's Monday, I'm allowed to make up words on Mondays).

1) The subject line of this post is from my favourite spam e-mail so far today. I don't know what it means but I like it.

2) How cool is this? I grabbed this from [info]ewillett...there is a chance of water on Mars.

3) As you all know by now, the space shuttle Atlantis crew made it safely into orbit. They'll be out walking around in space this afternoon. Have I mentioned lately how jealous I am of astronauts!? And NASA is still not returning my phonecalls about that job, damn them.

4) I had something for #4 but it's vanished on me. Expect an edit to this post later on when my brain comes back from its coffeebreak.

Hope this finds all of you well...my friends page is quite interesting these days, lots of people buying houses, sending stuff out to publishers, getting married, having babies, adopting kittens. When I'm busy and don't really have much to say, it's at least nice to see the rest of you aren't at a loss for words! *grinning*

It's a sad few days for space exploration.

21 years on Sunday, Space Shuttle Challenger exploded 73 seconds into its
launch, killing all seven astronauts on board. It feels like yesterday...

And, eerily close to that anniversary...February 1st marks four years since the
Space Shuttle Columbia disintegrated on re-entry, also killing everyone on
board.

And, though it's slightly before my time...I'm reminded by the news that today also marks the 40th anniversary of the fire that destroyed Apollo 1 on the launchpad.

I try to watch every shuttle launch and landing...and when the orbiter's safely into
space or safely back on the ground, I'm always damp-eyed. I cry because I'm relieved but also
because I'm jealous; despite all the risks, I'd go up in a second if I had the
chance.

Here's to all the explorers. *raises a glass*

Links, pictures, and blathering.

Von and Moggy 2
Okay, today I'm eating lunch at my desk and catching up on reading...so this will be a random babbly post, maybe with a picture or two thrown in near the end.

Ready...set...go!

First of all, Rick Mercer's started updating his blog semi-regularly again...and it's very funny. Today's post is about how the retarded Tories CanadianReformAllianceParty is still trying to reopen the same sex marriage debate. I thought this line was especially good:

"Sure the Charter looks nice hanging on a wall but the fact is it grants far too many rights that are contrary to the deeply held personal views of many chubby white guys."

Off ya go and read the whole thing, though...it's worth it!

Secondly, some space news...there's the planned moon base (where [info]zippyfish and I will be living as soon as it's completed...you may have trouble getting our Christmas cards to us, I'm not sure the postal service is ready to handle delivery to the moon) AND there's water on Mars?!

And, finally...it was Christmas at the Von and Moggy household last night! Here's me goofing around (what I do best) with the camera, lying on the lights that I was supposed to be putting on the tree:

Here's a jumble of decorations (we were sorting them out on the dining room table)...we have some nice, pretty glass ones and a few kitschy colourful ones....I think the A&W bear in the very upper righthand side of the picture counts as kitschy (kidding, I KNOW it does...but how can I part with it after all these years?!).

And here's the tree (though the blue LED lights show really, really brightly here for some reason...they aren't anywhere near that obvious on the actual tree):

I just finished uploading that last picture and a Christmas package arrived at my desk...one more present crossed off the list! Ho, ho, ho...life is good.

Unidentified flying object?

  • Sep. 19th, 2006 at 12:42 PM
Von and Moggy 2
Hey, cool...Space Shuttle Atlantis will be delayed in landing because there seems to be an unidentified object orbiting with it.

"Flight Controllers at the Mission Control Center in Houston informed the STS-115 crew to hold off on stowing the Ku-Band antenna to allow for possible inspections on Space Shuttle Atlantis.

An object was observed by Mission Control near the orbiter following standard tests of Atlantis’ reaction control system about 2:45 a.m. EDT today. Flight controllers continue to analyze the situation."
(from http://www.nasa.gov)

I'm sure it's going to be a little piece of debris (let's hope it's nothing off the shuttle) but, still, kinda like something out of a sci-fi film, isn't it?

However, here's hoping they really have solved the issues that brought Columbia down three years ago. After all, another piece of foam did fall from Discovery when it launched last year, leading some NASA experts to recommend against another launch so soon. Fingers crossed, people.
