TV Interview - complete!

Alright, here is the complete TV Interview I did for Talk Ottawa last June. This is a big file so I'm not sure how long I'll be able to keep this up on our server (and many thanks to [info]kevdead for that, of course). As long as I can, anyway.

For those who have watched the 15 minute part, you should be able to skip to that point fairly easily. I think. Ahem. I'm a little new to this whole video editing thing. :)

So just hit the little "Play" button at the bottom left and it should go!

And a snapshot from the interview (all official like!):

Let me know what you think!

The road to god knows...

Well, the last update for the main story is now up on GirlAMatic. That means the entire 142 page story can finally be read. Three short stories will follow starting next Monday (though some of you will have seen them before) and then that will be that.

It's a somewhat bitter sweet feeling. But a very, very positive one.

Cross post from GaM plus news on books is in the cut! )

RTGK contest continues - no winner yet!

  • Jun. 30th, 2008 at 8:27 AM
Von in toque

The road to god knows... contest is in full swing and, while there have been a number of good guesses, no one has come up with the right one as of yet. To recap, the question is this: what is Marie's middle name? And the one clue I gave is that her middle name starts with the letter "J."

Since I know guesswork is always a little tricky, I'm going to list some of the more common choices here. That should narrow things down a bit. And of course, when you're ready to make a guess please email me at rtgkcontest@gmail.com with the subject line "RTGK Contest" and your guess in the body. And please just one guess per day, too!

Here's the list:

  • Jeanne
  • Joline
  • Joanne
  • Jean
  • Jane
  • Julianne
  • Justine
  • Jacqueline
  • Jesse
  • Johanna
  • Janice
  • Jasmine
  • Josephine
  • Janet
  • Jennifer
  • Julia
  • June
  • Julie
  • Juliette
  • Joy

So again, these are all incorrect guesses. Some good ones in there, but nothing that's bang on correct. So please keep the guesses coming! The prize, of course, is this framed print of my GirlAMatic 5th anniversary birthday card design (I'm holding it in the pic below).

The road to god knows... contest!

  • Jun. 23rd, 2008 at 7:21 AM
Von in toque
Well, we haven't quite "gone fishin'" yet and since today marks the launch of a wee little contest for the road to god knows... on GirlAMatic, I thought I'd cross post the details here, too.

This is a lottery-type contest and is open to pretty much everyone (well, save any friends and family that will know the answer. If you know the answer right off the bat then you're disqualified! And I'll know who you are! :) ). Aside from that, it's open to pretty much everyone. With that out of the way, here is the question:

What is Marie's middle name?

Ok, right. It's tricky. There aren't any clues in the actual narrative to her middle name (well, nothing overt at any rate) and without giving you any direction it's a complete guessing game. Not really fair, I think. So, here's the only clue I'm going to give. Ready?

Her middle-name starts with the letter J and is just one word (no hyphens).

Since I don't want to be deluged by every guess under the sun, here is how this will work. Each individual (um, that's you) can email me once per day with a guess - just one guess from just one person. I'm not going to answer every single email, so when someone stumbles across the right name then I'll post an update on GirlAMatic, on our blog, and change the automatic response on the contest email address (more on that in a sec) so that everyone will know that the contest is closed. The first person to guess right is the winner. In the event of multiple correct guesses on the same day, I'll use the time/date stamp on my email to determine the winner.

Now, since I know privacy can be issue in this online world there are a few things you need to know. Firstly, I'm not going to sell or otherwise release your email address to the world at large or some scurvy company (hell, I wouldn't even know where to start!). But I would like to keep your email address just so I can let you know about my future projects down the road (for instance, my next story is tentatively called Stargazer and I'd certainly like to let you know about launch dates and whatnot when the time comes). On top of it, I would like to be able to announce the winner to the world at large, but you certainly don't have to use your real name. So if you have a handle you like to use and don't mind sharing (even if you just made it up), I'll use that instead. And if you have a website, blog or other slice of the internet, I would like to post that, too. Though only if you're ok with that, of course. Lastly, I'll need a mailing address from you for the contest prize (and again, I'll keep that private).

So what's the contest prize for all this? Well, it's a framed print of the GirlAMatic 5th birthday card design I came up with a few months back. It measures approximately 11" by 17" and I'll be mailing that out once I have a winner. The card design is below, but note that it won't have the GaM logo - that was digital add on and I don't have the right to use it for my own purposes. But the final image (I'm holding it in the next pic) still looks pretty nifty if I do say so myself.

GirlAMatic 5th Anniversary Birthday Card Design in Colour!

Von Allan with print

I've set up a dedicated email address that you can use for your submissions. And again, please remember that you each have one guess per day - one guess, per person, per day. That way I can keep it manageable. The email address is rtgkcontest@gmail.com and is active right now (If you click this link, the address should open automatically for you). Please put "RTGK Contest" in the subject line and then your guess and your name in the body. You will get an automatic reply from that address just to confirm your submission (so check your spam filters). You should only receive this once, though, so on subsequent emails don't fret if you don't receive it. If you don't receive the reply at all than I most likely will not have received your submission; in that case, leave a comment here to let me know. I will also get in touch with the winner for their mailing address and the like, too.

That's it, that's all. I have to admit I'm very curious to see what you folks come up with. I suspect a few will be better than what I chose, but so be it! I'm also not sure how long this will take (it'll depend on how quickly the submissions roll in, I suppose) so I may give further clues if the correct answer isn't hit on quickly. We'll see!

Good luck!

Miscellaneous and random.

1) I hate when people point this out...but now that I've done it, I realize why they do. See, I've done a big housecleaning on the friends list. It wasn't anything personal, I just realized that I'd started skimming the list and so it made sense to trim it a little. If you got caught in the crossfire and wish you hadn't, comment and I'll add ya back...I'm sure some people got removed by accident.

2) April Fool's Day came and went and nobody even tried to prank me. I don't know whether to be relieved or disappointed! On the bright side, though...I did get my folks with lyin' text messages. Hee hee.

3) In possibly related news, I might now be up for adoption if anyone wants a slightly bratty 33-year-old daughter.

4) Why is nobody telling Von how awesome his GaM card is? This makes me sad. http://vonandmoggy.livejournal.com/348885.html

5) When does spring get here? At the risk of being accused of whining...I'm freaking cold. It's messy out. It's grey and rainy. The wolves are after me. *howl*

6) We watched the first episode of Rome last night and it was excellent...except for the bit near the beginning where I got Life of Brian in my head and had to pause it for a sec to get the giggles out. "He has a wife, you know...and do you know what she's called? Incontinentia...Incontinentia Buttocks!" Ah, Monty Python...

7) I went downstairs to get a bag of chips and came back with a container of low-fat yogurt. Is this a sign of dementia?

8) Uh-oh, I've run out of things to say.

9) I wanted a 10-point list, dammit!

10) And now I have one.

Happy Tuesday!

Interview with Sequential Tart!

  • Mar. 24th, 2008 at 4:17 PM
Von in toque
I just realized that an interview I did with [info]kadymae is now up on the Sequential Tart website. It's right over here. Hopefully I did an ok job! And thanks to [info]kadymae for taking some time to do it with me.

Relevant bit:

ST: Mental illness is a touchy subject to write about. What kind of reactions have you received from readers about your treatment of how it impacts Marie and her mother?

VA: Well, no one is smacking me in the mouth over it and I think that's a good thing. Most people seem to be fairly touched by it, and I'm extremely pleased with that. I was really worried that it wouldn't work for some readers because they either wouldn't empathize with Marie, or just feel that her and her mom's reactions weren't believable. That doesn't seem to have happened, at least so far, and that's pretty awesome.

Part of this may just be that mental illness is one of the last taboos. Most people that I know have had some encounter with mental illness. Either in their family or through a friend of a friend. I doubt sincerely that "six degrees of separation" exist when it comes to mental illness. Probably more like two degrees.

Black Books- Half-ten
1) First of all, y'all should know that Von has been utterly wonderful looking after me and makes a very good nurse. No, get your minds out of the gutter, he's not wearing a little outfit or anything...he's just managed to keep a stubborn "sick" person on the couch, entertained, and fed since Wednesday. I'd be a pretty sad critter without his attention and support...oh, and his fruit smoothies and the gingerale top-ups. So go look at his GirlAMatic post tomorrow, please, and give him some love...he deserves it.

2) I've also had a bodyguard...here's the couch bed where I've been camped for the last couple of days, notice the little orange and white furball? Yeah, well she hasn't been further than a foot from me since I came home on Wednesday...she even beat up the much bigger tomcat this morning to get him out of the way and then took his spot. (See also computer, remote controls, and cell phone...in case you wonder how I've been entertained.)

3) The icon on this post is an inside joke for [info]pirate_kitchen (courtesy of [info]rainy_crossfire)...[info]pirate_kitchen works on contract and took Wednesday off to accompany me and Von to the hospital at 6 in the morning, which is above and beyond the call of friendship. [info]pirate_kitchen is one of The Good Guys and I want the whole internet to know.

4) Right now I'm watching Red Sox baseball on tv...yes, I know how geeky this makes me. It almost makes up for the fact that I can still see snow more than halfway over the living room window. *hisses at the snow* I know I took people to task for complaining about the snow awhile back but, honestly, it's Easter...it really should go away now, please.

5) And I guess that's all she wrote except for...once again, thank you for all your kind comments. Awful nice. *dances feebly*

And hope everyone is having a safe 'n happy long weekend!

Achoo!

  • Dec. 17th, 2007 at 10:26 AM
Von in toque
Hey folks,

A very cold-ridden Von here today. Cold-ridden and buried under mountains of snow, on top of it. According to the CBC, Ottawa received 37 centimetres of snow this weekend, "...setting a record for the most snow in a single December day in the city since Environment Canada started keeping records in 1938." The article goes on to point out that we've received 148 centimetres so far this season and that's only 2 centimetres shy of last year's total for the entire freaking winter. We actually had a green Christmas for the first time in my memory last year. This year, however, I feel like I should be battling Wampas on Hoth. I've now shovelled an insane amount of snow and it doesn't look like it'll be stopping any time soon.

The kid in me loves this. One of the fun things about being Canadian (or at least being Canadian in this part of Canada) is that we truly get to experience seasons. Ottawa actually catches newcomers off guard because of the massive range in temperature we experience. Summer times are sticky and hot and it's not unusual to have a 40 degree Celsius day. Then, when winter rolls around, we can plunge to minus 30 degrees Celsius with the wind chill. So you're looking at a 70 degree temperature "swing" that can be a shock to the system. It means that the seasons are beautiful but have to be appreciated for their own merit. I haven't quite learned to appreciate the humidity of summertime but I do enjoy the winter. There's just something magical about snow. Despite the chill, there's a freshness and crispness in the air that makes me feel alive. Like dancing!

The adult who has to lift the bloody shovel, however, isn't so keen. Toss in one helluva annoying cold bug and you have an interesting concoction. It's just one I'd rather not be experiencing right now. This is where the snow and cold is a drag. It's heavy and dense and it keeps coming. I shovelled five times yesterday and it just felt like it was never going to end. Including digging out a friends car that had been buried under a snow drift. Think about that for a sec. Snow drift. We're hoping to get some photos of this on the blog in the next day or two, but I'm not sure if pictures really capture what we experienced in Ottawa over the past 48 hours. Snow like you've never experienced it. Like crying!

So, that all said the latest instalment of my graphic novel "the road to god knows..." is up on GirlAMatic. This is the first update that's really dialogue heavy and we're starting to get into the characters now. So yay for that! And if you're in the mood to see other art, I posted a few more things on Friday night. I'm now going to have more coffee (MORE COFFEE, says I!) and munch some bagels. And then see what's in the cards drawing-wise today. 'Cuz I tell you: I'll either be drawing or curling up under blankets today. Care to lay bets which one will win?

Von

News, news, news!

  • Dec. 3rd, 2007 at 10:24 AM
Von in toque
So many things to cover today. And man, has it ever been a busy few weeks since the GirlAMatic announcement. Good busy but busy busy.

First things first: my bookie, the road to god knows…, officially launched today over at GaM. Four pages are up right now for your reading pleasure. I should point out that when you go to the link you’ll find the first page awaiting you. You’ll need to click the “next” button to go to page 2. And so on. A wee little editorial awaits you at the end of page 4, too. The story will update every Monday with four new pages. Moggy and I will try to spread the word as best we can but, in the meantime, I’d strongly recommend two things. First is to subscribe to the RSS feed on Gam ([info]ldragoon did a great "RSS for Dummies" post if you're new to this). Personally, I use Mozilla’s Thunderbird to read all my RSS feeds, but you really have many options out there. The second thing is to join the road to god knows… Facebook group. I’m hoping to use this for road updates and the like. ‘Course, if you do wind up missing a story update, you’ll always be able to browse the archives to catch up and get your fix.

The other big piece of news is that I’m involved in a show at the Parkdale Gallery. The show, called Comic Book Chaos, has a great variety of some truly fantastic art (including the likes of Ronn Sutton, Matthew Doddridge and Kan-J. Not to mention James Robinson, both gallery owner and an artist in his own right. Very cool to be rubbing shoulders with these folks. I have six pieces in and these are all available for sale (I’m hoping to get actual gallery shots in the next week or so, but you can see the pieces involved over at my Flickr account). Ottawa-based folks could, of course, go wander over to the gallery themselves. I’m also hoping to arrange a get-together at the gallery itself. Perhaps on Saturday. The cool bit is the show runs into January so there’s lots of opportunities to swing by.

This is a big deal for me. I’ve had a few other shows over the past year and a half, but this is my first chance at a gallery show. And the timing is great, too. The GaM launch and the gallery launch wound up nicely synching together. Just meant things were (and are) a little hectic. Next up is sending out press releases to the various media outlets (oh, and if anyone has any pull with the Mother Corp please let me know. That’s a rant for another time, but the CBC has been utterly non-responsive in all my contact attempts for the past 18 months. Very frustrating).

Lastly: I would be deeply appreciative if you helped spread the word about the launch of the road to god knows.... So blog it, spread the GaM link around, mention it to friends, whatever. Or even review it! Hell, even stumble it. But please, talk it up. I'm begging. Pretty please?

That’s it, that’s all. Please take a moment to go read the first four pages of road. And let me know what you think, ok?

Von

I know it's only December 2.

I know some folks don't like to put their trees up this early. To be honest, we usually wait another week.

But I wanted the tree up...I wanted lights and Christmas and happy-happy...and so [info]pirate_kitchen came over to help, we poured (and spiked) the eggnog, and up went the tree.

And there was much rejoicing! *sounds of rejoicing*

But, even nicer...don't forget to go and check out Von's GirlAMatic, starting on Monday!

And stay tuned for another fun announcement...for the local Ottawa folks, anyways.

I love being cryptic.

GirlAMatic.com - quick note

  • Nov. 26th, 2007 at 10:34 AM
Von in toque
Just a quick note of clarification (mainly because I'm extremely thick sometimes):

"The road to god knows..." will not be updating four days per week on GirlAMatic. Instead, four pages will update every Monday. This is totally my fault for the misunderstanding. So, to be clear: there will still be four pages of RTGK-goodness, but just one day per week - Monday! :)

I can be Mr Thicky Black Thicky Adder Thicky far more often then I'd care to admit. I'll be updating the releases and teaser poster accordingly later on today.

More GirlAMatic goodness!

  • Nov. 24th, 2007 at 9:30 AM

As things start to ramp up for the release of the road to god knows... over on GirlAMatic.com, I just wanted to mention that the story now has its own specific url. So, if you're a keener, why not book mark it right now? It's just over here.

There have also been some mentions on the inter-web about all of this. I think the nicest came from Heidi MacDonald over at The Beat.

I also created a Facebook site for the book's launch. This isn't a physical event, mind you (despite Facebook's odd tendency to label it that way) but rather just a group for the book's "go live" date. I've had a lot of mixed feelings about Facebook over all, but it seems to be tailor-made for these kinds of listings. And a proper group listing will probably appear at some point, too.

Lastly, I wanted to say thanks for all of the support I've received from so many of you. That means a great deal to me and it is much appreciated.

Now, time to wander off and find more coffee!

The big announcement!

Von in toque
I'm very (and I mean very!) pleased to announce that my bookie, the road to god knows..., will be serialized on GirlAMatic beginning on December 3rd. The story will update four days a week (Mondays through Thursdays) and, since the story is complete, there should be no missed deadlines. Barring, of course, personal catastrophe. :)

Very big thanks are owed to [info]ldragoon for all of her help and, of course, [info]arcana_j for approving me in the first place. GAM is a fantastic community and I'm quite happy (and a little stunned) to be rubbing shoulders with some pretty awesome creators.

Poster and more after the cut! )
