Random post the second...

  • Apr. 26th, 2007 at 5:05 PM
government moggy
First of all, during my recent travels, I stumbled on a quotation I really like:

"Love is like a friendship caught on fire." (Bruce Lee)

Says it all, really...quite a nice sentiment. Aaaaand having gotten the nice quotation out of the way leaves me free to quote from my new Archie and Mehitabel book later tonight...run! Run far! Run fast! This will be your only warning!

Second, on the good news side of things...my CT scan results came back and Fuzzy the Wonder Goat is fine. Not sure what's causing the headaches (probably just stress) but at least *channels Arnie briefly* it's not a tumah!

Third, here's my favourite picture of me from the recent San Fran trip...and the first ever candid picture of myself that I've actually liked (Jay took the shot). By the time I finished wading in the Pacific, I was soaked almost to the waist. I hope I never grow up...

Fourth and last, do please stay tuned for actual talk about APE...I'm just too tired to try and make proper sense right now. And if you have a post/pictures up from APE, can you please comment here and let us know? We both have Google Alerts set up but I'm sure stuff still slips through the cracks!

Semi random post...

  • Apr. 26th, 2007 at 4:20 PM
Looking down
Hello there,

The con report will have to wait...I'm just too damn tired today. I'm back at the office but I probably should've taken an extra day off. We landed at Pearson at dawn yesterday morning and then drove back to Ottawa so we were back in the house sometime before dinner. That's a long day and a half of travelling when you include time waiting at the airport and actual travel! I'm zonked (and the next person to point out how tired I look is gonna get a kick in the shins!).

Some randomness...

1) Considering I just bought a bottle of wine and the guy in front of me in line started up a conversation with me...and I couldn't even follow what he was saying...AND then I referred to Von as first my "husband" and then my "boyfriend" while answering a question about wine vs. beer...I'm obviously brain-dead. I think maybe I'll take a cab home so I don't mix up my traffic signals and get squashed by a crazed commuter.

2) I think someone on my friends' list will appreciate this but I can't remember exactly who...somebody here made or was given really funky antique eyeglasses that had been modified to look like something a 1920s mad inventor might wear. I was going to guess but, instead, I think I'll just stick the link to this funky antique pocketwatch up here and hope they spot it.

3) This might be the best secondhand bookstore I've ever been in; Serendipity Books, located in Berkeley, CA. A friend who owns an excellent comic book store (*cough*Comic Relief*cough*) was kind enough to give us a bookstore tour on Monday, after APE was done, and Serendipity just blew my mind. I have pictures at home and I will be posting them because this place is a see-it-to-believe-it deal.

4) I have the most condescending voice mail system EVER. I just tried to check my mail and goofed up my password, and its response was "I'm sorry you're having trouble. Try again later. Goodbye."

I think that's all she wrote...stay tuned for con details (probably tomorrow).

Our flight is in about an hour...we're homeward bound! We should be in Toronto by dawn tomorrow morning and then we'll slowly meander our way back to Ottawa. It's been a good trip and it ended with us on a beach looking out at the Pacific Ocean...

Stay tuned for more updates when I'm less tired. I hope all you other APE attendees got home safely! I'll be looking for the con reports, don't disappoint me!

A quick update.

  • Apr. 19th, 2007 at 10:53 PM
blurry late-night me
Hi,

Well, I'm very, very tired but not quite ready to sleep...I think Von and Jay are kind of in the same boat. Von's sleepily going through the tv channels and Jay's reading comics.

And I'm enjoying wireless internet access. What was life like before the internet? I can barely remember....

So, yesterday, the trip here...was pretty much a disaster. We got lost briefly on the 401 (the airport signage was pretty much non-existent), the Falcon was too big to park in Pearson's (Toronto's airport, for those not in the know) long-term parking, the combination of both those things meant that we nearly missed our flight when Von and Jay had to park the Falcon off-site (we made the check-in cut off by about 6 minutes thanks to my puppy eyes and a kind Air Canada agent who took pity on us), we couldn't sit together (and I ended up sitting between two chatty egomaniacs), and then the hotel lost our reservation.

We went to bed last night sad, tired, and frustrated.

But we woke up in lovely San Fran, had a very nice breakfast out with excellent coffee, spent the day wandering around, and then got back to the hotel to find an explanation for the reservation problem and an 'upgrade' to a nice new room (and when I say new, I mean new; freshly renovated and really pretty). We had excellent Chinese takeout for supper (and on the walk to pick it up, we realized exactly how close we are to the harbour!)...and everything looks much brighter today.

You know, I really love travelling...but I love it most when it goes smoothly.

Anyways, a few random street shots...Read more... )

How are the rest of you APE attendees doing? In town yet?

And now...bedtime.

Last-minute laundry done, late dinner and celebratory wine consumed (cheers, Von!), sandwiches made, convention gear packed, clothes folded, house cleaned, hair coloured, cell phone/iPod/laptop/camera batteries charged...I think we're ready!

We leave for Toronto tomorrow morning and, by 11:00pm, we'll have officially invaded San Francisco...this will be your only warning.

We should have wireless access (*fingers crossed*) so I'll try and post updates; if you need to reach us, e-mail me at moggy (at) vonallan (dot) com or call the cell phone number.

To everyone else who's APE-bound...travel safe and see you on Saturday!

Y'know, I never realized that Google has a spreadsheet feature. Me not so smart me. So, I put up my APE Exhibitor's List (sorted numerically by table number) for those who're keen.

The link is over here. I don't think one needs a Google account to open it, but don't jump all over me if I'm wrong!

APE Exhibitor List

  • Apr. 11th, 2007 at 1:15 PM
Von in toque
I've created an Excel spreadsheet that lists all the Alternative Press Expo exhibitors in numerical order by table number. One of my little pet peeves is that the only list that is sent out is sorted in alphabetical order. In a PDF, to boot. Not at all useful when one tries to figure out who one's neighbours are.

I don't believe I can post it to ye olde LJ, so feel free to email me and I'll send it to you.

1) There is something very nice about getting takeout from a restaurant you like but which is a bit expensive and which you've therefore been trying to avoid...and having the wait-staff greet you by name, sit down for a visit, and scold you about not coming by for awhile. *blushes*

2) I have my CT scan tonight and it's been driving me nuts all day. Have I ever mentioned how much I hate waiting? Well I do. When I make medical appointments, I always make them in the mornings, if I have a choice. That way I don't have to wait all day and slowly drive myself nuts making up scenarios about Fuzzy the Wonder Goat.

3) We go to San Fran a week from tomorrow. I have no words for this...I'm speechless. Or, anyways, as speechless as I ever get. (Don't forget to tell me if you're going to be there!)

4) And here, have a random picture off my hard-drive...I found this while looking for something else. The crescent moon as seen from the airplane as I flew from Boston to Halifax last fall. (This is one of my favourite pictures.)

And now LJ seems to be behaving strangely...it's not letting me add to this post. My text is just vanishing off the screen (I seem to be able to keep typing, I just can't see it). How very odd. Anybody else having issues?

Well, a year ago, APE 2006 was already underway...so, that brings me to APE 2007!

Here's the poll...but if you ARE going to be there, can you pretty please comment with your product or company name (or real name, if you're comfortable with making it public) so Von and I have a fighting chance of finding you? I'm going to take notes this time; last year we missed a whole bunch of people I would've liked to meet.

Things I've learned this week:

  • Mar. 7th, 2007 at 5:05 PM
government moggy
1) I don't update the LJ very well when I have other things on my mind.

2) I'm Canadian and yet I haven't been to a sugar bush in at least 25 years.

3) If there is cheese in my office, I will eat it. *goes to put cheese in fridge*

4) If you want me to do something I don't really want to do, either ask me six months in advance (I'll agree to almost anything if it's far enough away) or badger me at least once a week for almost two years.

5) It's a pain in the you-know-where to plan trips to the States out of Ottawa. Well, actually, I didn't learn that this week...but it was confirmed this week.

6) Ebay is great fun; you can find anything you want, no matter how obscure, silly, or geeky. Search "popcorn bag" and you'll see what I mean.

7) I am physically unable to tear myself away from classic movies on tv, no matter how late they're on. It might be an illness.

8) If you leave an earring out for two weeks, you can kiss that piercing goodbye. I'm now down to three earrings in the right ear...not that anyone but me will ever notice.

9) I need a haircut.

10) I haven't really done much learning this week.

And that's all she wrote, folks. Tell me something exciting, would ya please?

I blinked and lost January!

  • Feb. 1st, 2007 at 11:40 AM
blurry late-night me
Holy crap.

I just looked at the calendar and realized I'd run out of January days. Time to flip her over! Where is the time going? Almost a year ago that I was in New York City on the Big Adventure...SPX is a dim glimmer, four months back...and my crazy Boston/Halifax thing is almost five months in the past. W-oooow!

I need to reset my countdown clock to warn me that APE is coming or it'll be around the corner before I know it...we sent off the table payment, we have the hotel reservation, and we'll do the plane tickets tonight or tomorrow night. I guess we're going to San Fran! Is it too early to ask who else is going to be there?

::pauses::

Oh screw it...so, who's goin' to APE?! Roll-call!

As you can maybe tell, it's a bit of a quiet day. So far I've talked to a friend or two, sorted out some paperwork, and tried (and failed) to unlock my cabinet, since my lock hates me and is possibly possessed by some evil spirit:

And when I was unloading that picture from the camera, I found this one, taken the other night. If I'm on the computer at all in the evening, this is usually how it looks: me with the laptop on my knees and two cats next to me. I am, very possibly, a crazy cat lady in training.

Happy February, everyone!
