Screw the terrorists.
I'll keep flying, no matter how many plans they cook up to bring my plane down. Every flight I take, I'm already trusting that the pilot's sober and the mechanics put all the bolts in the wings properly...so now I'm also trusting security folks to look twice at the nervous couple wearing the big shoes and carrying all those sample cosmetic bottles.
Anyways, odds are infinitely better that I'll die under some Ottawa businessman's Lexus on the way to work one morning, instead of on a passenger jet brought down by box cutters, shoe bombs, or toothpaste. I'm not saying it's impossible (we've all watched, terrified, as it happened before), but what are the odds?
And if you want to keep living in this crazy modern world? Then you spins the wheel and you takes your chances, whatever the odds.
I'll keep flying because...
1) I won't live a life restricted by how and where I can travel. I want to see Australia some day and I'm not taking a boat there.
2) There's nothing for #2.
3) I like flying. I like the roar of the engines powering up and that amazing feeling of being pushed back in your chair as the plane lifts off the runway. I like to watch the ground drop away as I feel that exhilerating feeling of almost-weightlessness as the air rushes under the wings. (I'm nervous about landings but they're necessary evils so I put up with them.)
4) I like the in-flight magazines, I admit it.
5) I love mini bottles of airplane alcohol! I never, ever drink on the plane but the wee little bottles amuse me all the same.
6) The possibility of snakes-- I'm really hoping there are snakes on my next flight. How motha-fuckin' cool would that be?
7) I love airports. I'm a sick, sick individual-- I really like airports. I like the hustle and bustle, the conveyor belts, seeing the pilots hurrying to their planes, and watching the planes taxi in and out.
8) I love looking down on the clouds from 30,000 feet...they look like ice cream or frosting.
9) I love the look of the immaculate blue sky above the clouds...it feels like you can see forever. And you can, really, right off to the curve of the horizon.
10) I love night flights. The first time I saw a major city from the air at night (Montreal), I nearly cried...yes, there's too much light pollution from today's big cities, but when I saw the city all laid out in white and gold against the black earth...it was so beautiful I forgot everything I'd ever said about light pollution. It was that gorgeous.
