term paper done

Ten pages and 2500 words? How about 16 pages and 4200 words? :-)

I'll put together a summary for you all later--as always, when I finally start in on a paper, I find it even more fascinating than I could have expected.

Right now, though, I have some cleaning to finish and some cooking to do!

Tis but a simple blurb but I will admit even though I own the book in question, I never thought particularly about OSC's contribution.

There's a review at Amazon that sums up the book accurately:

Floating heads of DOOOOOOOOOOOOM.

  • Nov. 29th, 2009 at 1:20 PM

Last night involved fever dreams featuring eating tacos with Jon Pertwee, anthrax envelopes as a result of an online comics industry feud, and boarding schools that did not teach wizardry.

It was all sore throat and body aches yesterday... today is productive coughing and head congestion. I am drinking lots of juice and am sitting up, as that seems to do more for me than staying in bed. I'm wearing a sweater over my PJs, and wearing my little half-gloves on my cold paws.

I promised [info]firesign10 that I would not wield any heavy machinery more involved than a laundry basket or a keyboard today while under the influence of non-drowsy cold meds, which have me feeling like I could happily finish a certain infamous Coleridge poem.

The "bottled lightning" icon has been brought out of retirement to signify the year's turn towards varying celebrations that involve seasons of light. I have many friends who walk many paths... Buddhism, Wicca, Judaism, Islam, Christianity, and others individuated to their needs. But most, if not all, involve light, love, sharing, peace.

Wishing you all light in your lives, whatever you may celebrate.

Christian side hug

  • Nov. 29th, 2009 at 1:08 PM

This entry originated at adampknave.com.

No, they’re not kidding. The “Christian side hug” – because “front hugs is sinful.” Yep. Did you know if you hug someone normally you will end up fucking them? NOW YOU KNOW!

Also they’re “Rough riders, filled up with Christ’s love,” if you were curious.

These are the easy rules so pay attention, it’s essential
This ain’t no front hug zone. You ain’t that fly (something).
Stop. And listen. No front hugs and no kissin’.

A Screaming Wierdy for the Ages

  • Nov. 29th, 2009 at 9:46 AM
I had a dream I was at a fannish convention and one of us had a little sister who needed to have some driving lessons, so several of us piled into Dail's big green van to give her moral support as she tootled around town.

But that's not the crackiest part.

Maya Angelou was the driving instructor.

The day starts cold, some ice on the deck. The showers are still happening, but with less frequency. The clouds are showing signs of clearing, and I expect to see some snow covered peaks all around. I've had my breakfast, read my email, Facebook, and Twitter. I need to make a run to the dump (transfer station) and to the Circle K for a Sunday paper.

We will see what  the day provides....

Robert Holdstock Is Gone

  • Nov. 29th, 2009 at 10:20 AM
It's now been confirmed for me by a couple of sources that author and decent human being Robert Holdstock passed away early this morning.

I barely knew him at all. We only met in person once, and corresponded little more than that. But we had lots of mutual friends. And my work would be very, very different if it wasn't for Rob.

I bought his most famous work, MYTHAGO WOOD, at the 1986 San Diego Comicon. And that book changed my conception of what good fantasy could be. It is utterly impossible to overstate (or deny) the book's influence on my subsequent professional efforts. STARCHILD took some structure from it, and in one case practically (okay, literally) lifted an entire scene from it. I wore Rob's influences like a badge of honor, because I thought everyone could see how his book had transformed me. And I wanted to share that feeling.

STARCHILD eventually turned into more of its own thing - but the echoes of Rob's influence still resonate within me. And the other works he did in the MYTHAGO cycle were examples of truly excellent literature. And even after I came into my own as an author, the ripples still had an effect: it was pure coincidence that hois CODEX cycle and my IMAGINARIUM GEOGRAPHICA cycle featured ties between Jason of Greek Myth and Merlin. The books are completely different in execution, and his work is in another class altogether - but when I found out about the CODEX books, I smiled. Because I knew I'd learned the right lessons, from the teacher who hardly knew how influential he was.

I'll see you in the wood, Rob.

that which sustains me

  • Nov. 29th, 2009 at 12:17 PM
Once again Brent has taken Bobby out on a man-venture to allow me to work on my paintings. I'm doing that right not but I'm at the point were I need certain parts to dry (or mostly dry) before I can do the next part. I decided to kill paint drying time by singing along to music and checking my twitter feed.

Let me just say this:

My taste in music is ACES! Everything I like, I like because it emotes. It makes me feel something. There are a lot of good songs in the world, but if it doesn't make me FEEL something deep within mah bellay then I'm not interested in hearing more than maybe 2 times.

Artists currently driving me are:

-Metric
-Sondre Lerche (favorite song right now is "My Hands are Shaking" SERIOUSLY AWESOME)
-Immaculate Machine

And more but those are the last three that came up on random.

So anyway, there I was singing along to great songs and checking my twits and then Torrie posted this link and I just soared. I feel like if I read that EVERY MORNING nothing bad can happen in my life and I will always feel full of spirit and artistic motivation. I don't even know how else to describe that link. Please PLEASE read it and let me know what you think. Do you even find it interesting?

I find sometimes things that change me mean less than dirt to others. I can see it. I know I feel nothing for things that drive others. Good thing there's lots of stuff out there for all the different kind of people.

On this day:

In 2008 -
In 2007 -
In 2006 - ruh roh! I didn't want to eat!!! Trouble in the henhouse.
In 2005 - I'm not irresponsible, but I try to have fun in everything I go.

my Sunday feeling

  • Nov. 29th, 2009 at 12:17 PM
Quiet day today, a good end to the long weekend. I've been -- with assorted friends and family -- to the Cloisters and to the Bronx Zoo this weekend. The zoo has a lot of stuff that's closed for the season, unfortunately -- and Tiger Mountain was closed yesterday, too, dadgummit -- but there was still lots of good stuff to see, including Madagascar and the aquatic birds and such. Plus we rode on the bug carousel....

The Cloisters is also always worth a trip (and a particularly fine place to go on Black Friday, as it's way off the beaten path up in Ft. Tryon Park at the upper end of Manhattan). It's always a joy to see the tapestries and the statues and such. Plus there's a great view of the Hudson River and the George Washington Bridge out on the terrace.

Today I plan to get serious work done on a new Dragon Precinct story I've been working on for Danielle Ackley-McPhail's upcoming Dragon's Lure anthology, and I also have some audio stuff to record for both The Chronic Rift and HG World.

Cha cha cha...

Mannitol?

  • Nov. 29th, 2009 at 12:14 PM
Okay, what is the deal with mannitol? I know it's supposed to be a sugar derived from wheat and is ostensibly gluten free but my last batch of Centrum vitamins (with this ingredient) have made me super sick. I've had all the fun of a glutening; stomach pain that wakes me up in the night, nausea, IBS flare, etc.

Anyone else have problems with this ingredient?

Okay, this isn't really cooking related but it IS food related.

I'm having to go grocery shopping tomorrow and the food I get needs to last about a month.

What should I stock up on?
How can I preserve my fruits and veggies?

I have a standard sized freezer/fridge combo so I don't have a whole lot of space.

Thanksgarving

  • Nov. 29th, 2009 at 12:16 PM
I had my first really massive "big deal" Thanksgiving ever this past weekend, and I've got to admit, it was pretty awesome. A bunch of friends got together and everyone brought a ludicrous amount of food and drinks to share, and we just pigged out from mid-day onwards and it was AMAZING. Honestly, just way too much food. I think I might still be recovering. Thanksgiving was never really a big deal for me growing up at all, but I think I'm starting to understand why people tend to make such a fuss over it south of the border.

In other news, I was looking through my computer recently and realized I had a bunch of sketch pages scanned to my computer that I hadn't posted online. So hey, sketch dump!

Sketch Page

Also that last sketch is partially inspired by the recent series of portraits David Yoder has been doing, which you should totally check out.

MY HEAD!

  • Nov. 29th, 2009 at 11:58 AM
Okay, allergies have finally kicked into overdrive. I need to get me to Shoppers because I'm feeling really sick and it's making me miserable. I also need new headphones, since the puppy decided that mine were a chewtoy last night. He thought the same about my bra too. -_-

Gaming last night with [info]pyat, [info]velvetpage, [info]momentrabbit, [info]catsarah, [info]sassy_fae, [info]nottheterritory and introducing [info]koresrabbit in a cameo appearence, although we kidnapped her character and took it with us so we could have a better droid. It was an awesome session - lots of table talk, but we got a ton done and there were some great character bits (and by "great" I mean "completely insane"). I'm cool with table talk, although I sometimes find it hard to heard what the GM is saying because my brain is wired odd and I can't really block out non-GM chatter on the first go. Focus is poopy. Thankfully Pyat is good at repeating for me. :D

I also got to discover the wonderfulness that is O'Neils, a little local fast food joint that's down on Barton. Loved the burger and fries that I got there and I'll probably suggest returning there in later games. XD

Anywho, next on the grand adventure, we landed at mining outpost to meet up with our new contact, discovered that the staff turnover on the outpost was because a stormtrooper squad replaced them, quickly ran off to avoid said squad, raced another ship to claim an asteroid, discovered that said asteroid contained some sort of landing bay, a newsreel that explained some plot points (GIANT FLOATING HEAD) and, most importantly, some sort of portal link to the ghost ship that we saw the game before this one. We left off with the tech discovering that the ghost ship's systems were offline after a power surge and each needed to be restarted manually. So, yeah, A LOT happened.

I'm working on a log (anyone actually read those, lol?), but it won't be finishing until late tonight because I'm busy today. Not sure if I'm going to take Pyat's suggestion and put in some third person narrative bits or switch to a third person style completely. The exercise was originally to help me get into my character's messed up little head. I'm really not going to force myself into a scribe position because my character's mindset is so twisted towards the rest of the crew and it effects how I see the other character in play. Well, that's a lie - I think Kyrie can stand Moment and Erin's characters and there's some grudging respect for Catsarah's character. And Des's character can make club sandwiches and tea, so that can't be all bad.

Going to hang out with Mike and Lisa and play board games today. Once I get meds. YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY.

WHERE IS EVERYBODY?

  • Nov. 29th, 2009 at 11:31 AM
Hmmm. A big THANK YOU to all those who posted on my LJ Friends list yesterday. A lot of you are still alive!! I know some of you have migrated to the annoying Twitter or to the "LJ lite" Facebook, and that's cool. Life is fast moving. Not really a lot of time to be doing lengthy posts on the Livejournal, far easier to do a wee status update. Still others have probably given up on the thing. Well, whatever. I'm still here and so are some of ya, right?
YESTERDAY: Spent a short time in Hamilton, as my niece had a big 17th birthday celebration at a Banquet Hall(all paid for by one of her friends. Quite a bit of change, so that's one good friend...). The theme was "New York, New York", so you know I was a little bit misty eyed over a salute to my fav city.
There's never enough time to do stuff in my ol' hometown. I'd need a couple of days at least to visit everyone or see old haunts. Course, that really wrecks me up, wandering the old stomping grounds. I actually had a very depressing moment at one point driving by a series of lonely looking apartments and thinking I might end up in a place like that. Crushing.
TODAY: Been cleaning up the house after a criminal amount of time ignoring it, gotta hang the Christmas lights, gotta go grocery shopping...arrrghhh!!

Silly Site o' the Day

Keith brings me to the Muppet Wiki neologism virmup, which is short for "viral Muppet video." You know, like the Bunsen Honeydew Carve-O-Matic which was everywhere on Thanksgiving (and made right before Hallowe'en, the same time as the Swedish Chef one that nobody seemed to run), or the "Bohemian Rhapsody" one that propagated just about everywhere (including here) a few days ago. According to the site, Upcoming Muppet videos will include "Dust in the Wind", "American Woman", "Popcorn", "Carol of the Bells" and "Stand By Me." The wiki page includes links to and info about all the viral Muppet videos done so far, and do scroll down to the end to see the various Muppets' YouTube channels, Vimeo accounts and MySpace profiles. What, no Faceook?
