Just skimming this on Von's computer on my way to bed and....yes, he said it right, Tony is one of the good guys. This is a real shame. If you need representation, get in touch with Tony, you won't regret it.

Yeah, it's a tough, tough thing. But hopefully it'll work for the best. We'll see.

Beard: and thanks! :)

Hey, I know Tony. Haven't seen/heard from him in a the past year or two, but that's probably my fault for striking APE and SPX from my con lists. I'll drop him a line. And yes, I think he is the only independent comic sales rep.

Also, hat icon. Just for you.

Yeah, I think he'd probably like to hear from you.

You said: "...but that's probably my fault for striking APE and SPX from my con lists."

I wouldn't mind learning a bit more about this. Especially what led you to make that call.

And then...the hat! Yay! :)

Two reasons:

1. Traveling expenses + the hassle of transporting books, graphics, and table stuff.

2. At both shows, my sales were mediocre at best. I tend to do very well at all conventions, but for reasons I can only guess, I never broke past the break-even point at either and did both for two years running. Granted, my break-even point was higher than the usual show because of the aforementioned traveling expenses. If I had to guess, I would say that the crowd was looking for the more 'mainstream-indie' books from Fantagraphics, Top Shelf, Oni, etc. SPX was always a little better than APE for me and the crowds there were always larger. At APE, it seemed like the crowd checked out the main floor and then right out the door again.

For the past two years I have kept my appearances within a 5 or 6 hour driving radius. SPACE (in Columbus), Pittsburgh, Chicago are my best shows and I've learned from experience that 4 or 5 shows a year is all I can handle -- anymore than that and I'm cutting into my comics production time. I will, however, be breaking that geographic barrier in September when I go to Baltimore.

I'm sure I'll try one or both of these shows again in the future when I have some new material to promote, but for the present, I'm better off skipping them.

I would definitely agree with this. Actually, it was probably my biggest shock. I expected at these two cons that people would be way more open to experiment but I really don't think they are at all.

I also agree that hitting shows that are local to you (and your radius feels about right to me) is the best way to go. It's impossible to make a go of it if the travel costs plus hassles are just too big. Live and learn.

This really sucks. Tony is a long-time and good friend, and he's generally had it hard enough...

He has had an extremely rough couple of years. There's private stuff that's not appropriate for a blog post (though hopefully you know what I mean). He could use a really good break.

Part of the reason why I wanted to do the post in the first place is that it's so easy to forget that moves like this do hurt people. Again, not that I begrudge Fanta for making the move, but all the nattering about Diamond and whatnot just frustrated me - very few were saying "what about Tony?"

I'd been wondering how that part of the industry worked. Tony sounds like the kind of guy I would have liked to do business with.

Would have...? You certainly still can, of course. :)

Ah! I misread too quickly last night. If he's still in business, then. I will make it my goal to one day have something for him to sell! And maybe even better have some people for him to sell to.

Oh, good! I'm hoping he will be in business for a really long time. He holds a remarkably unique position in the Direct Market and aside from my concerns about him personally, I worry about the loss in diversity we'd see if he closes up shop.

That said, I don't want to overstate it - a majority of stores don't carry indies at all and also don't deal with anyone but Diamond. So Tony's client list is probably no more than a few hundred stores at the most. But those stores are responsible for helping move the medium of comics forward. So anything that makes them weaker I'm not keen on.

I think I shall have to do some business with him, we should start and indy publisher drive to all work with Tony, heck I would be glad to give him exclusive distribution rights as I am avoiding diamond at all costs right now.

Saw him at MoCCA last year, wandering around, intensely focused on some mission or something. My comics did not appear to hold his attention, but that isn't his fault, especially in view of the list of things he looks for as mentioned in the interview by Spurgeon.

I'm never sure if cons are the right sort of venue for this kind of thing. They seem to be, but I know I'm intensely focused at the cons I've exhibited at and I tend to blank out a lot of other stuff (which is a regret to a point).

While there's always a chance he may not have dug your stuff for whatever reason (and possibly one of the ones he mentioned in the Spurgeon piece), I'm sure dropping him an email inquiry wouldn't hurt. Worst he can say is, "nope, the answer is still no." And the best answer might be pretty cool.
